Amazon has added 14 categories so far this year to double the number it had in January.

Amazon.com Inc.’s Canadian e-commerce site, Amazon.ca, yesterday added two new product categories: groceries and auto parts. That marks 14 new categories Amazon has launched in Canada this year, double the number it had at the beginning of 2013, the retailer says.

“Amazon.ca dramatically increased our selection this year, and we are pleased to now bring the Auto and Grocery stores to our customers,” says Alexandre Gagnon, Amazon’s country manager for Canada. “With just a few clicks, customers can discover millions of items, take advantage of free shipping or free two-day shipping with Amazon Prime and have items delivered to their doorstep.”

The grocery store on Amazon.ca includes more than 15,000 dry food items and fresh flowers. Amazon says most of those items are eligible for free shipping or free two-day shipping for Amazon Prime subscribers.

That’s a step closer to the same-day grocery delivery service Amazon has been testing for several years in the U.S., first in Seattle and, since this summer, in Los Angeles. Called AmazonFresh, the U.S. grocery service offers both dry and perishable goods like fruit or meat. The e-retailer also offers same-day delivery services, though not for fresh groceries, in 11 U.S. markets: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, the New York metropolitan area, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, Washington, DC, and San Bernardino, CA.

The Amazon.ca auto store is larger than  the grocery store, with millions of products including replacement parts, car electronics, interior and exterior accessories and auto fluids, for many types of vehicles, including RVs, motorcycles and ATVs. More than 63,000 of those items are eligible for free shipping and, as usual, Prime members can also buy select auto parts with free two-day shipping.

Earlier this fall, Canada Post Corp., Canada’s national postal service, began testing same-day shipping for e-commerce deliveries from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (No. 4 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide), Best Buy Co. (No. 11), Indigo Books & Music Inc. (No. 218) and Future Shop, a consumer electronics merchant that is part of Best Buy.

Amazon is No. 1 in the Top 500.
