The e-retailer starts selling some 40,000 works from artists and galleries.

Amazon.com Inc. this week launched an online store where consumers can shop for fine art from some 4,500 artists and 150 galleries and dealers. Dubbed Amazon Art, the marketplace, at amazon.com/art, offers more than 40,000 works, according to the e-retailer.

Amazon is No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 and No. 11 in the newly released 2013 Latin America 400.

Shoppers at the site buy works from artists and galleries, some of which are located in Europe, Amazon says. Consumers can search by such attributes as style—for instance, impressionism or realism—subject—say, abstract or nature—and price, including $10,000 and above. Many products also contain descriptions about the artist’s intent and similar information.

“We are excited to bring one of the largest selections of fine art direct from galleries to our customers,” says said Peter Faricy, vice president for the Amazon Marketplace.  “Amazon Art gives galleries a way to bring their passion and expertise about the artists they represent to our millions of customers.”

Earlier this year, Amazon launched its Entertainment Collectibles Store, where consumers can browse and buy some 350,000 collectibles from the worlds of film, music and past and present pop culture.
