The facility will focus on e-commerce and mobile initiatives.

Staples Inc. has opened its e-commerce-focused Velocity Lab in Cambridge, MA. The facility will help the office supplies chain develop e-retail and mobile commerce programs. Staples, No. 2 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, earlier this year announced a restructuring plan that included closing stores and investing more in the web.

Staples, which has set a goal of tripling the size of its e-commerce and information technology staff by 2014, announced its plans to build the facility just less than a year ago. The Velocity Lab can house up to 75 workers and accommodate visiting employees. The facility, located in Kendall Square, sits in a tech-heavy area of the northeast.

“Staples is investing to provide a superior multichannel shopping experience through the use of our web sites, mobile assets and stores,” says Brian Tilzer, the chain’s senior vice president of global e-commerce. “The Staples Velocity Lab is vital to the development of our e-commerce assets, as it provides a space to allow our teams to think creatively, enhancing our mobile commerce, social media and online offerings.”
