Amazon Inc., No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, today launched a Kindle store in India. Consumers can buy more than 1 million titles priced in Indian Rupees, or INR, in the store. Amazon also announced a new deal in which consumers may purchase Kindle e-readers from select stores operated by the  nation’s Croma retail chain. Although customers in 175 countries, including India, can still buy the Kindle, Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G from Amazon.com, this is the first time the Kindle is available from an Indian retailer, an Amazon spokeswoman says. Amazon’s country-specific Kindle stores sell digital content only.

“We are excited to be the first retailer in India to offer the latest generation Kindle to our customers. This product will launch exclusively in all Croma stores across India at an introductory price of 6,999 INR,” says Ajit Joshi, CEO and managing director of Croma. 6,999 INR equals about $126 at today’s exchange rate. The newest product in the U.S. store, the Kindle Fire, costs $199.

“We are proud to launch this new Kindle store for Indian customers—offering Kindle book purchases in rupees and the ability to buy and read the work of many great Indian authors,” says Russ Grandinetti, vice president of Kindle content, Amazon.com. “In addition, we are excited to work with Croma to make Kindle available at retail outlets across India.”

Today Amazon also launched Kindle Direct Publishing in India. The service allows Indian authors and publishers to make their work available to consumers globally via the Kindle or free Kindle reading apps on other devices, set special prices for their books in the Indian Kindle Store and opt to receive royalty payments in rupees.

Besides India, Amazon has Kindle stores in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.

In February, Amazon launched an online marketplace for Indian consumers called Junglee.com, which lets consumers shop for products from both bricks-and-mortar and online Indian retailers as well as from Amazon.com.

In other Kindle news, Amazon is now selling LexisNexis legal e-books in Kindle stores, the legal content and technology company announced today. The titles available on Kindle or Kindle reading apps may also be leant through private law libraries via the LexisNexis Digital Library, it says.
