Shopkick also announces it is using Giftango to deliver mobile gift cards.

On the heels of its deal with Target Corp. and the chain’s 1,800 stores nationwide, mobile rewards app shopkick has announced that American Eagle Outfitters Inc. is rolling out the location technology to all of its U.S. stores.

Customers can now get special offers in more than 1,000 American Eagle and Aerie stores using shopkick’s location-based app, shopkick says. American Eagle’s Aerie line sells loungewear and intimate apparel.

Consumers who download a free shopkick app to their iPhone or Android device can earn what shopkick calls kicks—essentially rewards points—for walking into a store, as well as receive other offers throughout the stores for doing things such as scanning bar codes on items.

American Eagle was one of shopkick’s first partners when the app launched in August 2010. Over the past two years, the retailer has been testing the technology in more than 200 stores. American Eagle says it decided to roll out the program nationwide because it helped bring more traffic to stores and boosted sales. American Eagle says shopkick users spent more and engaged more with its brand.

“Shopkick is an ideal partner for American Eagle Outfitters as we strive to be an early adopter of technologies that matter to our customers,” says Fred Grover, executive vice president. “We are excited to expand our long-time partnership with shopkick to delight customers in all of our stores nationwide.”

Additionally, shopkick says American Eagle is the only retailer that integrates shopkick points with its own loyalty program, enabling customers to turn their kicks into American Eagle rewards points.

Each retailer can set its own methods for offering shopkick points, which are sent to a shopper’s shopkick app via special in-store transmitters.

To celebrate the national launch, American Eagle Outfitters and Aerie are featuring a week of special shopkick offers each day through June 12—including 200 bonus kicks for walking in, 20% off a purchase and discounts on swimwear, jeans and footwear.

1,250 kicks gets consumers a $5 American Eagle gift card Five kicks can be used to make a donation to charity. Other rewards include a $25 Restaurant.com gift certificate for 875 kicks.

Target shoppers can get a $2 electronic gift card once they accumulate 500 points, a spokeswoman for Target says. Larger accumulations of points can be redeemed for gift cards of up to $25 in value. Consumers can also get song downloads and movie tickets with shopkick points. Target shoppers also get 60 points just for walking into a store, though the retailer may up that to 100 or more points on special days.

American Eagle is also participating in shopkick’s Buy and Collect program that enables users to earn more rewards when they make a purchase with a Visa card that is linked to the program. Currently, consumers earn 400 more kicks for a $75 purchase, 750 for a $100 purchase and 1,000 for a $125 purchase.

When a shopkick user walks into a participating store, the app detects the shopkick signal, emitted from a device about the size of a brick, which is picked up by the shopper’s smartphone handset. Because the store is focused on rewarding actual visitors, it then delivers kicks via the app, which can be redeemed at all participating retailer locations.

Shopkick also just announced it is using mobile gift card provider Giftango Corp. to deliver digital gift cards to consumers cashing in their kicks.

Giftango’s platform connects shopkick users with their gift card of choice to deliver rewards to their mobile device. Home improvement chain Lowe’s, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Papa John’s and Fandango are using Giftango to deliver shopkick giftcards. Giftango says it expects 14 more retailers to sign on in the coming weeks.

Shopkick says it charges a small fee for each kick offered in a store. Shopkick also receives a percentage of the sale when points are used to purchase something, and the company charges a fee of less than $100 for each store transmitter.

Retailers deploying shopkick include Target, Macy’s, Best Buy, Crate & Barrel, Old Navy and Toys ’R’ Us. Shopkick has more than 3 million active users and has delivered 1 billion deals and offers to consumers, the company says.
