The merchant tops this week’s Keynote Mobile Commerce Performance Index.

Mobile consumers seeking to shop Sears Holdings Corp’s mobile commerce site do not have to wait long. For the week ending June 3, the merchant’s mobile home page loaded on average in 3.57 seconds, according to the Keynote Mobile Commerce Performance Index, compiled by mobile and web performance management firm Keynote Systems Inc. Load time is a key metric for retailers to watch as mobile shoppers tend to be less patient than their desktop counterparts, m-commerce experts say.

The Sears mobile home page loaded completely and successfully 99.42% of the time. The weighted combination of load time and success rate earned Sears an index score of a near-perfect 999 out of 1,000. Sears is No. 21 in the Internet Retailer Mobile Commerce Top 300.

Toolfetch.com LLC came in second on the index with a load time of 4.70 seconds and a success rate of 98.62% for a score of 933. HSN Inc. came in third with a load time of 6.73 seconds and a success rate of 99.45% for a score of 906.

Amazon.com Inc. came in fourth with a load time of 5.98 seconds and a success rate of 98.38% for a score of 885. And L.L. Bean Inc. came in fifth with a load time of 7.14 seconds and a success rate of 99.03% for a score of 876.

The average load time for all 30 retailers on the mobile performance index was 9.66 seconds, the average success rate was 97.56% and the average score was 742.

Keynote Systems measures 30 representative m-commerce sites exclusively for Internet Retailer. The sites include merchants in multiple categories and channels, and of multiple sizes, ranging from such giants as Amazon.com Inc., Sears Holdings Corp. and Walmart.com, to midsized retailers like Sunglass Hut and Toolfetch.com LLC. Keynote tests the sites in the index every hour Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. through midnight Eastern time, emulating three different smartphones on three different wireless networks: Apple Inc.’s iPhone 4 on AT&T, the HTC Evo on Sprint and the Droid X on Verizon. The HTC Evo and the Droid X run Google Inc.’s Android operating system. Keynote runs the tests in New York and San Francisco.

Keynote combines a site’s load time and success rate, equally weighted, into a single score. Given that both performance and availability are important, the score reflects the overall quality of the home page; a higher score indicates better performance. Scores also reflect how close sites are to each other in overall quality. The index average score is the midpoint among all the sites’ scores.
