The world’s largest online retailer’s first warehouse in the state opened in 1997.

Amazon.com Inc. said today it will open a fulfillment center in Middletown, DE. The warehouse will be the second fulfillment center for Amazon, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, in the state. Amazon opened a facility in New Castle, DE, in 1997.

Amazon says it will spend more than $90 million on the new warehouse, which will employ about 850 full-time workers. Because of that investment, a state agency called the Delaware Economic Development Office awarded the retailer $3.47 million from a development fund to support the expansion. The fund will also contribute to the company’s infrastructure investment, equal to 3% of the total capital expenditures, up to $1.35 million. Amazon will also receive a real estate tax abatement from Middletown for the next 10 years.

“We look forward to opening our second facility in Delaware this year, creating 850 new jobs in the state,” says Dave Clark, vice president, Amazon global customer fulfillment. “We appreciate the hard work of the many state, county and local leaders who have committed to Amazon jobs and investment as part of this project.”

Amazon’s fulfillment centers in Delaware are operated by Amazon.com.dedc LLC.
