Consumers can shop for vehicles, parts and accessories via the app.

EBay Inc. has puts its eBay Motors buying and selling service on the road with a mobile app designed for Apple Inc.’s iPhone.

The app enables users to shop for parts and accessories by simply scanning a car or truck’s vehicle identification number, a unique code for each motor vehicle. The app then places the vehicle’s year, make and model in the My Garage feature that stores a user’s vehicle information. From My Garage, users can shop for parts and accessories on eBay from within the app. Users can choose their favorite eBay Motors listings types to display in a slideshow that runs on the app’s home screen.

Other app features enable the consumer to search for vehicles to buy; share vehicle data on Facebook and Twitter; access AutoCheck, a vehicle history report service from Experian; and access his eBay account.

EBay Motors chose a mobile app over a mobile web site in order to take advantage of a smartphone’s camera, GPS and push notification capabilities, says Steve Yankovich, eBay vice president of mobile. “For eBay mobile this means a richer shopping experience,” Yankovich says. He expects consumers to peruse the app even if they are not in the market for a car, and “get inspired for their next purchase.”

EBay says the number of vehicles sold on the auction site via a mobile device increased 110% in the first quarter over the first quarter of 2010. The company would not provide specific sales totals, an eBay spokeswoman says.
