A Web Design & Usability speaker says slowly loading pages can kill conversions.

When online retailers consider how to increase conversions on their e-commerce sites, they don’t usually give enough attention to how quickly their web pages load, says Meir Tsinman, president of TheMedicalSupplyDepot.com. He will speak at the Internet Retailer Web Design & Usability Conference 2011 in a session entitled “A detailed approach to speeding up page downloads” on Feb. 15 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“Statistics show that each second delay in page load can decrease conversion by as much as 7%,” he says. “In this session, we’ll be talking about what we did to improve our conversion rate and user experience by significantly reducing the time it takes for our pages to load.”

Tsinman will discuss how speeding up page downloads takes more than just throwing servers at the problem.   MedicalSupplyDepot.com undertook a complete website recoding to speed up page downloads, a process that took months. When it was finished, pages loaded much faster and the company experienced an immediate lift in conversion rates.

The session will give attendees information about how the company realized it had a problem, how it decided recoding was necessary, what it took in resources, staff hours and management oversight to complete the process, and the benefits the company has received as a result.

Internet Retailer’s editors asked Tsinman to speak because at TheMedicalSupplyDepot.com, in addition to overseeing all company operations, he is deeply involved in developing strategies to improve customer experiences with new technology. In 2010, the company completed a total site makeover—from a visual redesign to a complete code overhaul—that enhanced site presentation, created easier and better ways for customers to shop for supplies and equipment, and resulted in significantly faster load times that have led to increased revenue.
