61% of Facebook users 24 years old or younger check the social networking site daily, a new study from consumer electronics reviews and shopping site Retrevo suggests. Moreover, 18% of the group say they check the site every few hours.

 

61% of Facebook users 24 years old or younger check the social networking site daily, a new study from consumer electronics reviews and shopping site Retrevo suggests. Moreover, 18% of the group say they check the site every few hours.

Older Facebook users were slightly less frequent visitors to the site. 55% of Facebook users 25 years old and older check Facebook daily, according to the study of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers. The study also found that 11% of that 25-and-older group report checking the site every few hours.

The popularity of Apple Inc.’s iPhone, one of the growing category of smartphones that provide consumers with Internet access wherever they are, may contribute to the rise of social network use. 28% of iPhone users check or update Twitter before they rise, 26% do it before they turn on the TV and 23% use it to access news in the morning.

The report also found

 

     

  • 16% of respondents 24 years old or younger rely on Twitter and/or Facebook for the morning news.

  • 24% of respondents 24 years old or younger, and 12% of those 25 and older can be interrupted by an electronic message while in the restroom.
  • 49% of respondents 24 years old or younger, and 27% of those 25 years and older, can be interrupted by an electronic message during a meal.
  • 22% of respondents in the 24-and-under group, and 11% of older consumers, can be interrupted by an electronic message during a meeting.
  • 40% of respondents say they don`t mind being interrupted for a message during a meal.
  • 7% say they would check out a message during an intimate moment.

 

It seems brands are paying attention to social media’s popularity. A recent survey by web marketing consultants E-consultancy of 400 companies, 19% of which were e-retailers, found 77% were using Twitter. That could be because it is cheap. 32% said they do not spend anything on social media beyond their employees’ time, 36% spend less than $5,000 a year and 12% spend $10,000 or less.
